Constituent relationship management handles all of the various relationships a nonprofit has with everyone connected to the nonprofit. This includes the volunteers, employees, donors, potential donors, and any additional people who support the organization. Because of the diverse range people involved, the software used to manage the people needs to be as diverse.
In its most basic form, open source software is software whose source code, or the programming language used to create it, is open and available to the public. This crucial part of open soft software offers nonprofits a variety of advantages.
Customization is the biggest benefit of opensource software. Closed solutions in which the source code is proprietary can be limiting. This works really well for many people but is not for people who need functionality that doesn't come with software that comes in a box. It might be possible to convince a vendor that something that is needed is needed for a number of clients as well. While this is great, the feature will only be included in future versions, if it's included at all.
If the vendor cannot be persuaded, the functionality feature will have to be developed in-house, if the talent is available, or developed by an outside consultant. The vendor might agree to develop the feature for a fee on top of what has already been spent on the core software.
With open source, the nonprofit was much more control. The initial approach to software selection is the same but the nonprofit itself can create the code required for the change itself or hire a consultant to do the programming. This can be done if the vendor didn't have the time or motivation to implement a change.
The nonprofit can then give the new code to the vendor who then would tie it into the product and support it. The change to the code would be available to all users of the vendor's software.
The new code can be done to create anything the nonprofit feels it needs. Anything the nonprofit needs or wants can be included in the software that is used. This gives nonprofits freedom. In addition the open source software is much less expensive than closed source software. This gives the nonprofit financial freedom. Many nonprofits need every dime they can get. Open source helps with that.
